L'ambitieux juriste se laisse convaincre, malgré l'opposition de son épouse, qui craint de le voir compromettre sa carrière. Il ne tarde pas à comprendre que le procès a été bâclé. Son travail est d'autant plus difficile que la plupart des témoins de l'époque sont morts ou refusent de comparaître. Mais DeLaughter rencontre un homme, qui dit avoir entendu De La Beckwith se vanter d'avoir tué Evers au cours d'un meeting organisé par un groupe d'extrême droite...
