Mais, la mission de Sinclair, puis celle de John Sheridan, s'avère particulièrement difficile à cause des conflits entre mondes (les Centauris contre les Narns), des dissensions internes (chez les Minbaris, et aussi sur Terre). Petit à petit, des indices semblent prouver l'existence d'une race aux desseins destructeurs, les Ombres.

Lors du grand cataclysme ("Summer Of Love"), Adrock Thurston, éminent chercheur, meurt en sauvant sa planète.
Renton Thurston, son fils, est alors élevé par son grand père, mécanicien, dans la banlieue de Belforest.
Renton (14 ans), est féru de "lift", sport qui consiste a surfer sur des vagues de TraPar.
Souvenir du Summer Of Love, le TraPar (Transparence Light Particule), courant invisible, offre à Renton sa principale occupation : lifter de grandes vagues de TraPar et devenir comme son idole Holland, pro du lift.
Malheureusement, Renton s'ennuie à Belforest où il ne se passe rien, et où il n'existe pas de vagues de TraPar suffisantes pour réaliser des figures impressionnantes.
Il souffre également de la notoriété de son père.
Ce qui va délivrer Renton de cette monotonie, c'est l'arrivée assez inattendue de "Light Finding Operation (LFO)" militaires en ville, et, le soir même, d'un LFO en détresse qui se pose en catastrophe...
