L'histoire se déroule au Japon, à Edo (ancien nom de Tokyo), dans le quartier de Fukagawa. Obeni et Seiji sont frère et soeur et gèrent ensemble une petite échoppe qui loue différents accessoires. En effet, Fukagawa est un quartier régulièrement en proie aux flammes et les habitants ont pris l'habitude de louer certaines choses plutôt que de les acheter. Filmé sur dix ans, ce thriller documentaire suit l'histoire de Steven Avery, citoyen américain qui a passé 18 ans en prison pour agression sexuelle (avant d'être innocenté par un test ADN), avant d'être accusé et condamné pour avoir commis le meurtre de Teresa Halbach deux ans après sa sortie de prison. Sa défense lors du second procès a notamment invoqué le conflit d'intérêt évident (et reconnu) dans lequel se trouvait le département de police du comté ayant mené l'enquête, département qui était poursuivi pénalement par Avery pour mauvaise conduite dans la première affaire.
