Lors d'une attaque, la station spatiale est détruite. William meurt et la mère de Curtis, grièvement blessée, parvient à s'échapper avec Mala, Simon et le robot Grag. Curtis est né peu avant. Sur son lit de mort, la mère de Flam demande que Curtis consacre sa vie à préserver la paix et l'ordre dans l'univers. Flam est éduqué par les trois compagnons de ses parents et, à 18 ans, s'engage dans la lutte contre le mal.
