Avec le professeur Simon Wright (qui meurt prématurément, et dont ils parviennent à sauver le cerveau et à l'implanter dans un robot volant), ils ont conçu un robot androïde : Grag (prononcé « Crag » dans le dessin animé) et Mala, un androïde qui peut prendre l'apparence de n'importe qui grâce aux avancées de la biologie moléculaire.
Lors d'une attaque, la station spatiale est détruite. William meurt et la mère de Curtis, grièvement blessée, parvient à s'échapper avec Mala, Simon et le robot Grag. Curtis est né peu avant. Sur son lit de mort, la mère de Flam demande que Curtis consacre sa vie à préserver la paix et l'ordre dans l'univers. Flam est éduqué par les trois compagnons de ses parents et, à 18 ans, s'engage dans la lutte contre le mal.
