Comment Francisco de Goya y Lucientes (1746-1828), observateur joyeux de la vie populaire et portraitiste de cour adulé, est-il devenu le peintre visionnaire du mystère et des gouffres humains, aux avant-postes de la modernité ? À trente ans de distance, deux toiles représentant les fêtes de la Saint-Isidore, saint patron de Madrid, symbolisent la vertigineuse évolution de l'artiste. "Entre l'ancien monde et le nouveau, au croisement des temps…", résume l'écrivain Jean-Claude Carrière à l'orée de ce fascinant voyage dans la vie et l'œuvre du maître espagnol. En 1788, Goya voit dans La prairie de Saint-Isidore un panorama lumineux et fourmillant de vie ; exposée aujourd'hui au Prado, dans la salle consacrée aux peintures noires qu'il a exécutées aux alentours de 1820 sur les murs mêmes de sa maison, La procession à l'ermitage Saint-Isidore, menée par des masques grotesques, serpente au milieu d'un paysage envahi de ténèbres.
