Tommy, un jeune garçon de dix ans et demi, est arrêté puis placé dans un centre de réhabilitation pour jeunes délinquants. Avec d'autres jeunes de son âge aux prises avec de graves problèmes de comportement, il devra apprendre à vivre en société en accord avec l'autorité. Son éducateur, Gilles, doit aussi apprendre comment aborder ce jeune garçon sans famille et sans repères, qui ne communique que par des crises répétées et incontrôlables. À un tel point que la sécurité des autres est peut-être en danger. Mais pour Gilles, abandonner et confier le petit Tommy aux policiers est hors de question.

La plus grande créature du monde... et l'homme qui veut la traquer
1969, 80 km dans les eaux sovétiques. Le sous-marin Uss Acushnet est en mission de reconnaissance quand il se fait attaquer par Moby Dick, une baleine tout droit sorti de la préhistoire. Deux survivants sont connus: Boomer et son ami John Achab, qui fut le premier à détecter le monstre. L'attaque laissera des séquelles, Boomer ayant perdu l'usage de sa main droite; et Achab, sa jambe. 40 ans plus tard, le commandant Achab, aux commandes du dernier nés de la classe Virginia, l'Uss Pequod, dont il a supervisé les modifications, décide de prendre sa revanche. Cessant toute communications avec l'Amiral De Deers, Chef d'Etat-Major de la Troisième Flotte américaine- qui envoie Boomer, devenu capitaine, pour l'arrêter- il poursuit Moby Dick à la trace de ses attaques et force une biologiste, le Docteur Michelle Herman, et son assistant, Pip, à l'aider à la retrouver afin de mettre un terme définitif à ses attaques...
